BHEL to begin renewable energy generating equipment production soon

Mr O.P. Bhutani, Director, R&D (Engineering), BHEL, told presspersons: “We will enter into manufacturing of renewable energy generating equipment in a big way and will go in for a joint venture with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), Bangalore, to install a manufacturing facility at a capacity of 250 MW for the production of solar photo voltaic cells.’’

Already a memorandum of understanding has been inked with BEL and it has developed a prototype model at a capacity of 8 MW. Soon, the joint venture agreement would be signed and it will be at an investment of Rs 3,000-4,000 crore on a 50-50 ratio.

Though the location of the factory is yet to be finalised, it is expected that it would be commissioned within two years, Mr Bhutani said.

BHEL is also contemplating installing a manufacturing facility at its unit here to produce solar thermal power generation systems.

“For this purpose, a collaborative pact has been signed with Abengoa, a Spanish company specialising in this product. This will require only an incremental investment at Tiruchi complex since already the Tiruchi unit of BHEL is manufacturing thermal gensets and heat exchangers”, Mr Bhutani said.

BHEL has already come out with a commercial model, an upgraded version of integrated gasification combined cycle plant with a capacity of 180 MW.

“This process is the conversion of coal into gas and thereafter generating steam by virtue of burning the gas and thereby the quantum of emission is reduced to an optimum level”, he said.

ONGC asks Bhel to supply the two turbines simultaneously to save project time.

ONGC's first power venture in India , the 8,500-crore, 727-MW gas-based power plants in Tripura, is likely to be completed by December, a year before schedule.

"The project will start earning revenues a year earlier than scheduled, which will add to the top line as well as the bottom line of the company," A K Hazarika, chairman and managing director, told ET on Thursday.

ONGC has also asked Bhel to supply the two turbines for the plants simultaneously to save project time. "Bhel has already constructed one turbine for ONGC, which is waiting at Ashuganj port. Another turbine of the same capacity is lying with Bhel, however, it is meant for another plant in western India, but that project is delayed and we have asked the equipment manufacturer to supply both turbines simultaneously," an OPTC spokesperson said.

NTPC-BHEL JV should focus on BOP equipment: Shinde

Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today said the joint venture between state-run NTPC and BHEL should focus on building equipment other than boilers, turbines and generators, as there is a dearth of companies engaged in the construction of such machinery in the country.

"There is a shortage of balance of plant (BOP) equipment in the market. Lot of companies are developing boilers, turbines and generators," Shinde said at the Operational Performance and excellence awards organised by NTPC.

"For sometime, NTPC-BHEL JV company should do only the balance of plant equipment, after that, they may go BTG sets," he added.

NTPC-BHEL Power Projects is a 50:50 JV firm formed in April, 2008, with a focus on engineering, procurement and construction contracts, besides the manufacture and supply of equipment for power plants.

The JV has an order book of about Rs 450 crore. It is targeting an order book of Rs 7,000 crore by the end of the current fiscal (2010-11).

BHEL, Spain's Abengoa to develop concentrated solar power projects in India

The public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Spain's Abengoa, the European leader in the solar energy segment, have joined hands to develop state-of-the-art concentrated solar power (CSP) projects in India.

An agreement in this regard was signed in Seville, Spain by BHEL Chairman and Managing Director B P Rao and Abengoa Solar Chairman and CEO Santiago Seage.

A press release from BHEL said the agreement would enable the two companies to leverage their capabilities in offering engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) solutions for CSP projects in India.

It would also give them the opportunity to explore cooperation in energy projects in other parts of the world, the release said.

According to it, the agreement is significant in the context of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, recently launched by the Government of India, which aims at setting up 20,000 MW of solar power projects by 2022. The mission depicts the county’s commitment to the abatement of green house gas emission aimed at reducing global warming.

Abengoa serves the solar, bio-energy, environmental services and power generation sectors and has a presence in Europe, the United States, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

'BHEL has never been afraid of competition'

Established more than 40 years ago, Bharat heavy electricals limited (BHEL) is the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in India in the energy-related/infrastructure sector. Its chairman and managing director BP Rao spoke to the Hindustan Times. Excerpts: How do you see BHEL growing amid the emergence of companies setting up power equipment manufacturing hubs?

BHEL started off as a government enterprise and still 67% is owned by the government, of the 33% owned by the private sector, some 40% is held by foreign institutions. Our shares are very heavily traded in the market.
We have never been afraid of competition. Presently, BHEL is having 15 manufacturing units and four power sector regional centres. With 15 regional offices, four overseas offices, one subsidiary and eight separate service centres, BHEL has a very wide reach across India and our penetration of the market is deep. Therefore, we can reach any customer within a matter of hours. We manufacture the entire range of power equipment for all fuels (Thermal, Gas, Hydro, Nuclear, and Renewables) which is why we describe ourselves as an integrated power plant equipment manufacturer. Over the last five to six years we have grown at a rate of 20- 25% per annum, our top line has tripled and the bottom line quadrupled in a matter of four years.

BHEL likely candidate for Maharatna status: Praful Patel

Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel today said BHEL is likely the next candidate to get the coveted Maharatna tag, a move that will provide more financial flexibility to the state-run power equipment manufacturer.

"One of the companies which can qualify for Maharatna status in near future is BHEL...," Patel told reporters on the sidelines of a AIMA event here.

At present, there are four Maharatnas -- ONGC, Indian Oil , SAIL and NTPC.

A PSU with Maharatna status can invest up to Rs 5,000 crore in a project independently, while the limit for Navratna companies is Rs 1,000 crore.

For getting Maharatna status, a company needs to have a three-year track record of annual net profit of over Rs 5,000 crore, net worth of more than Rs 15,000 crore and turnover of more than Rs 25,000 crore. It should also be a listed firm.

"It (to accord Maharatna status to BHEL) is being examined and will be done shortly. BHEL is likely to fulfill that criteria soon," Patel added.

BHEL's turnover was Rs 33,173.34 crore in the fiscal 2009-10. However, the company's annual average net profit was Rs 3,433 crore during the last three years.
