BHEL wins order for Multi-Terminal System

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won a breakthrough order from Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. for ± 800 kV 6,000 MW HVDC Multi-Terminal System Package associated with the NE/ER-N/WR Interconnector-1 project, in consortium with ABB, Sweden.

This will be world’s first ± 800 kV, 6,000 MW Ultra High Voltage Multi-terminal DC transmission link. The link comprises three converter terminals and a power transmission system with a built in capacity of up to 8,000 MW which is the largest HVDC transmission system ever built. The use of Ultra High Voltage (± 800 kV) minimises transmission losses. In financial terms, this is the largest order finalized in T&D sector anywhere in the world.

The ± 800 kV North-East Agra UHVDC link will have a capacity to transmit up to 6,000 MW of clean hydroelectric power from the North-East Region of the country to Agra across a distance of 1,728 kilometers. This transmission super highway will to a large extent ease the ever increasing power shortages in northern India.

BHEL has target of Rs 2770: Devang Mehta

BHEL has target of Rs 2770, says Devang Mehta from Anand Rathi Financial Services.

Mehta told CNBC-TV18, "Going forward BHEL is going to get a lot of order inflows as the capex cycle starts improving. 14-15 gig watts of order is being expected and already 21 gig watts of order is in the commission phase and the next 1-2 years looks like a strong capex cycle and good order flow for them."

He further added, "We do have a fundamental price target of around Rs 2770 for BHEL but on a short term horizon I do not know whether it would do well at least one month but probably two three months down the line things would improve and BHEL and L&T would do very well."

BHEL awarded N, NPT certificates by ASME

The High Pressure Boiler Plant of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), here has been awarded N and NPT certificates of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a professional body and an engineering society. A press release said BHEL was now authorised to use N and NPT stamps for Nuclear vessels to Cl 1,2,3 requirements, piping systems to Cl 1,2,3 requirements, storage tanks to Cl 2,3 requirements, Shop Assembly and Fabrication without design responsibility to Cl 1,2&3 requirements. Through the certification, BHEL is also recognised as a Materials Organisation by ASME, it said. The certificates are valid for three years from January 31, 2011 and have been awarded after in-house efforts of BHEL for nearly a year and rigorous audits by ASME auditors of the quality systems of BHEL to meet the stringent requirements of the nuclear components, it said. The authorisation assumes importance for BHEL, since nuclear power is fast growing as a source of electricity in India after thermal, hydro and renewable sources, it said. As of 2010, India has 19 nuclear power plants in operation generating 4,560 MW while four others are under construction and are expected to generate an additional 2,720 MW of energy, it said. Calling ASME "one of the oldest standards-developing organisations in the world", it said the society produces approximately 600 codes and standards, covering many technical areas, such as boiler components, elevators, and measurement of fluid flow in closed conduits, hand and machine tools. BHEL develops 1200 KVA transformers

"We have been successful in developing a 1200 KVA transformer. It costs Rs 25 crore and can serve a population of five lakh if installed at a big power station," RK Mahapatra, AGM, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Jhansi, said while talking to newspersons at HBTI on Thursday.

Mahapatra was one of the keynote speakers during Resonance.

He said that BHEL has been exporting quality transformers to countries like Greece, Jordan, Oman, Afghanistan, many Latin American nations, Tanzania, Iraq, Iran, Libya and Egypt. He said that Egypt and Jordan are the biggest importers of transformers from BHEL.

Mahapatra informed that BHEL has developed `control shut reactor' which is capable of controlling power fluctuation.

"Control shut reactor has been developed for the first time in the country. It can be installed in power stations and is capable of controlling fluctuation. This helps in saving electrical appliances from getting damaged," he added.

He said that India has become the third country after US and Japan to have developed super conducting transformer. Is just one-tenth the size of the normal transformers of 2 MVA capacity. Mahapatra said that in these transformers, liquid nitrogen is used as a coolant. A 2 MVA transformer of this type costs around Rs 3 crore, he added.

BHEL eyes business in Kerala

As part of its efforts to expand its base of away centre vendors, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi Complex, has invited journalists of print and electronic media from Kerala region for an industrial tour during the course of this week.

An experimentation a few months ago by BHEL, Tiruchi, when it invited a media team consisting of business reporters from Kolkata has fetched the desired results; owing to the awareness created by the media, prospective vendors from West Bengal are making enquiries for sub-contracting business with the Seamless Steel Tube Plant, official sources said. The visibility of BHEL created through the media in Kerala is also expected to create similar business opportunities for the PSU, the sources explained.

Besides the BHEL's shop floors and the Welding Research Institute of national importance, the media team from Kerala will also be taken to the units of front-ranking vendors for an understanding of the dynamics of the sub-contracting business. BHEL officials explain that presence of sub-contractors closer to project sites will help in decreasing the cycle time of product delivery.

Poised to exceed Rs. 12,500 crore turnover mark this fiscal, BHEL, Tiruchi Complex, is on a phenomenal expansion mode to attain a target of 20,000 MW capacity by 2012.

BHEL-BEL JV to generate power from solar energy

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is all set to enter into a joint venture with the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) for an ambitious project for power generation from solar energy.

As a part of the project, a power manufacturing facility with a capacity of 250 MW will be installed. An initial agreement has been made in this regard and the final pact will be signed in a month.

The project will be set up at a cost of around `2,000 crore on a 50-50 ratio, BEL officials said. Once it starts operating, the project will achieve its full capacity within 26 months.

“Initially wafer manufacturing facility will be set up as a part of the project. The project will generate 250 MW of power per annum. Of this, 100 MW will be used for production of power modules which will be used for setting up power plants later,” sources said, adding that the technology for setting up the power manufacturing facility is already available with BEL.

Power generation will be possible three months after a power plant facility starts operating. The Union government has already initiated a major project called Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) for generating 20,000 MW of power by 2020. The officials pointed out that the BEL-BHEL project would help in achieving this goal. “Unlike most existing power generation projects, this initiative is cost-effective. Being a solar-energy based power generation project, there won’t be any major expenditure for purchase of raw materials and the running cost is negligible. Also, being a solar energy based power generation facility, it is environment-friendly and pollution-free.

The power used for setting up and running the facility in the initial phase can be restored within a period of one-and-a-half years,” sources said.
