BHEL bets on new business models, overseas opportunities

Faced with reduced order book and stiff competition, power equipment maker BHEL is exploring new business models apart from scouting for overseas opportunities in Russia, Kazakhstan and other countries. In its 2013-14 annual report, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) said the company has taken various strategic initiatives to sustain and grow in present adverse market conditions. BHEL is exploring new business models with partnerships for power plant developers for upcoming UMPPs and debt financing for new projects in partnership with financial institutions are also underway. China firm gets time to beef up case against BHEL

In a small consolation for a Chinese firm-led consortium bidding for the 9,207 crore Ennore power project, the Madras high court granted it another week to marshal documents to seek disqualification of BHEL from participating in the tender process. The issue relates to a petition filed by CSEPDI-TRISHE, led by Central Southern China Electric Power Design Institute (CSEPDI), which has bid for the supercritical thermal power project. The other bidder is BHEL. Taking exception to the processing of BHEL's bid, the consortium said the public sector company had inordinately delayed several power projects involving 7,300MW in the state and hence should be disqualified from bidding for the project. Last month, a single judge asked Tangedco, the generation and distribution arm of the state power utility, to give a personal hearing to the consortium and consider its representations before finalising tenders. Challenging it, the government filed an appeal. more at: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/China-firm-gets-time-to-beef-up-case-against-BHEL/articleshow/40541174.cms

To boost generation, NTPC seeks tie ups with Coal India, Bhel

NTPC is keen to join hands with Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) to augment its generation capacity and capability, which have been hit by a coal shortage. Minutes of a July meeting of an advisory group on integrated power development, headed by Suresh Prabhu, said, "NTPC's performance was affected in recent years, and continues to be so, by the general situation of the coal shortage in the country. While this is true, it is also a fact that NTPC could develop the coal blocks allotted to it from 2004." In 2013-14, the thermal power producer's dependency on imported coal increased to 10.39 million tonnes (mt) from 9.09 mt in 2012-13. For this financial year, the figure is expected to rise to 17 mt. The company's fuel costs rose to Rs 12,765 crore in the June 2014 quarter, 35 per cent more than in the corresponding period last year, while revenue from operations rose 16 per cent during the same period. BHEL develops new boiler for power generation

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has developed a new kind of boiler . This is one of the key equipment in power generation. Known as ‘Fuel Flexible Supercritical Boilers', this new equipment can help in producing electricity with 100 per cent domestic coal or 100 per cent imported coal. Currently, the companies are required to mix both categories of coal in a fixed ratio and also have to consider few characteristics before blending. Now, with the help of this new boiler, there would not be any such requirements. According to a company statement, the new equipment is meant for coal-based power plant also known as thermal power plant. Latest data for power generation states that 3,55,499 billion units of power were generated during April-July of the current year, out of which 2,94,833 billion units were by the thermal power plant. This is 82 per cent of the overall power generation. more at: http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/bhel-new-boiler/article6328467.ece

BHEL Q1 profit may fall 24.8% to Rs 350 cr on lower revenue.

BHEL announce its first quarter (April-June) earnings on Tuesday, is expected report subdued performance for yet another quarter. Analysts say BHEL’s performance should remain muted given execution concerns with its private sector order book. According to them, reducing order book, limited movement in slow-moving orders (around 20 percent of order book which include names like Indiabulls, Visa Power, Monnet Ispat, Abhijeet Power, Bajaj Hindusthan), delay in clearance and delay in payments by clients are impacting execution. The topline may continue to decline in Q1 as well due to continuing execution challenges and weak order inflow. State to reclaim unused BHEL, Bhopal land, says Gaur

BHOPAL: Home minister Babulal Gaur, who represents Govindpura, the constituency that covers BHEL, said the government would reclaim its land from the PSU administration. He said almost 2,000 acres of land is lying vacant for past many years. Asked for reaction to a large number of houses lying vacant in several BHEL localities, which have become breeding ground for mosquitoes, Gaur said, "The land was given to them for developing industries, hospitals and market, but it is lying vacant and is being encroached upon. In 2004, the state government wanted the land back and now BJP-ruled government at the Centre, we will exert pressure on them to hand over land to the state." These single story quarters were constructed to accommodate skilled and unskilled employees of BHEL when it was set up long ago. "We want to build an ITI campus on unexploited land so that the state has its own ITI campus and aspiring students need not move to other cities to pursue course, Gaur added. Talking to TOI, BHEL general manager (human resources) S Chaturvedi said, "In last 15 years we have not employed unskilled labourers. Earlier, we had strength of 19,900 employees, now it has been reduced to mere 7000 employees. There has been a drastic decline in the manpower." According to BHEL authorities, now the employees don't want to stay in these small houses. "They take loan and construct their own house according to their need." When asked whether the state government has ever wanted to reclaim the land, he said, "We have not received any notice by any department but if the central government decides to take it back, we will abide by the decision." As far as vacant houses are concerned, these would be demolished soon and some 20 of them have already been demolished, he added. ref: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bhopal/State-to-reclaim-unused-BHEL-land-says-Gaur/articleshow/39795709.cms
